Universities across the U.S. are reducing PhD admissions and, in some cases, rescinding offers due to federal funding uncertainties. Uncertainty about how much money colleges and universities stand to lose has led some schools to reduce the number of doctoral students, in some cases reneging on offers.Comment on Facebook
Yes this is horrific. One of the tutors on my team is currently getting a PhD at Penn and told me that they've seen, first hand, the results of the cuts. However, there are two other things to consider: 1. Penn, like many other schools, has a very bloated administration. I know that with the recent change in executive administration, there has been a hiring binge for administrators who are putting together teams. This is very costly and is creating more unnecessary layers. Perhaps Penn, and other schools, need to take a look at staffing and determine the reason for the staffing. Reconsider hiring practices. 2. At well-endowed schools like Penn, which has an endowment of $22.3 billion, the sixth largest in the US, they can absorb the cost of these candidates. Why won't they? Is this not a bit selfish and shooting yourself in the foot?
